On Saturday, 3rd July, 2021, police officers allegedly visited the office of Senior Counsel John Khaminwa in Nairobi, sparking concerns about the safety of the 84-year-old lawyer.

According to Khaminwa, the men posing as police officers attempted to extort money from him, further raising suspicions about their true intentions.

The raid comes a day after Khaminwa appeared in the Court of Appeal to argue against the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020, which was declared null and void by the High Court.

Representing Kituo Cha Sheria and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Khaminwa argued that President Uhuru Kenyatta had contravened the law by initiating the BBI.

He also criticized the President for disobeying court orders and demeaning judges, saying that the court should stand firm and not listen to him.

The KNRC has condemned the raid, terming it unacceptable and an abuse of office.
