On July 2nd, a catastrophic fire erupted on the ocean surface, approximately 5:15 AM, west of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.

The dramatic scene, dubbed 'the eye of fire,' took on the shape of an eye, as witnessed in a viral video on social media.

The fire is believed to have originated from an underwater pipeline connected to an oil platform owned by Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex.

Fortunately, Pemex's fire control boats were able to extinguish the blaze by 10:30 AM using water.

However, environmentalists warn that the damage caused by the fire will have a detrimental impact on the Gulf's biological diversity.
