On a Friday evening in July 2021, a sting operation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at Molo Police Station turned violent. The operation aimed to arrest a senior officer over bribery allegations.
According to Nakuru County Deputy Police Commander Joseph Tonui, the EACC detectives had set a trap for the officer, who was to receive a Sh10,000 bribe from a bar owner. The detectives 'treated' the money, and when the officer received it, they pounced on her.
Tonui explained that a complainant had informed the EACC about monetary demands made by the senior officer to facilitate the release of a suspect. The detectives gave the complainant the demanded Sh10,000, which was treated money, and the officer received the cash after which the sleuths pounced on her.
The police officers resisted the arrest and instead handcuffed the EACC detectives and locked them up in the cells. A resident who sought anonymity revealed that he had gone to the station to pay cash bail for his daughter when the drama ensued.
Mr. Tonui said the OCS was later arrested and is now being grilled at the Nakuru Railways police station. The police boss said investigations are underway, and appropriate action would be taken.
This is the second time the officer is on the spot following a June 4, 2021 incident when her house help vanished with Sh320,000 she had kept in a safe in her house.
