On July 1, 2019, a controversy erupted on social media when Kim Kardashian West unveiled her new clothing line, which included a kimono-inspired design. The move sparked outrage in Japan and abroad, with many accusing her of disrespecting the traditional outfit.

Now, the mayor of Kyoto, Daisaku Kadokawa, has waded into the debate, penning a letter to Kardashian West to ask her to reconsider using the name 'Kimono' for her trademark.

"We're concerned that a wrong understanding of kimono will spread since Ms. Kardashian is such a powerful influencer," said Mai Sakai, a Kyoto city official in charge of traditional crafts.

"Kimono is a traditional ethnic dress fostered in our rich nature and history," Kadokawa wrote in his English-language letter to Kardashian West. "I ask you to reconsider your decision of using the name Kimono in your trademark."

Kardashian West had previously told the New York Times that she had no plans to produce clothes that would "in any way resemble or dishonour the traditional garment".
