Published on July 2, 2021, a Makueni court handed down a five-year prison sentence to a repeat offender for attempting to break into a shop.

Benjamin Mutuku, the accused, pleaded guilty to the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate George Sagero on Thursday. The incident occurred on June 29, when Mutuku attempted to break into a shop belonging to Joseph Mulwa in Kalawa market.

The court heard that Mutuku had a history of burglary, having previously served a three-year sentence in 2019 and a six-month imprisonment in 2012 for similar charges.

Despite his guilty plea, Mutuku asked for leniency, stating that he was remorseful and willing to reform.

Meanwhile, in the same court, Felix Kioko was fined Ksh10,000 or faced three months in prison for being in possession of 75 litres of illicit brew, also known as Kaluvu.

Kioko admitted to the charges, which contravened the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act of 2010. He was arrested on June 30 at Iuani location, Makueni Sub County, following a tip-off by members of the public.
