On Friday, July 2, Deputy President William Ruto visited the Kamukunji Gateway Mall, an impressive eight-storey building constructed by Nancy Wamaitha, a former Mitumba seller turned businesswoman.

Wamaitha's rags-to-riches story caught the DP's attention, and he praised her for her determination and entrepreneurial spirit.

"This keen bottom-up focus on our economy will produce more jobs, create more wealth for ordinary people and generate more taxes to aid government functions," the DP stated during the visit.

He also expressed gratitude to Kamukunji residents for voting him and President Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2017 elections.

The visit came days after President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his admiration for slum dwellers who constructed a Ksh300 million company.

"You started small in 1973 here in Kiamaiko and you have been consistent. Today together as 3,000 members you raised Ksh300 million to put up this huge investment. This is not an easy job and I congratulate you Mr Chairman together with your members," President Uhuru Kenyatta stated.

Wamaitha's success story is a testament to the power of hard work and determination, and her 8-storey mall is a shining example of what can be achieved with the right mindset and support.
