On July 2, 2021, a group of construction workers in Nairobi's Westlands area found themselves in a desperate situation after their employer, a foreign national, abandoned them without paying their salaries.
The workers claim that their employer left the country two months ago and has since cut off all communication with them.
Rasputin Angelo Ondiege, a Project Manager at Rokoh Construction, stated that they have tried to reach the boss via various means, including calls, emails, and WhatsApp, but to no avail.
"We have tried reaching him via emails, but he doesn't respond to them. He however responds to WhatsApp messages and claims that he is getting to the bank and is sending money, yet days and weeks pass without him honouring his promises," Ondiege said.
Ondiege appealed to the government, specifically CS Fred Matiang'i, to intervene and help the workers receive their pay.
"If doctor Fred Matiang'I is listening to me, let him use all his available resources to find this man so that he clears with us because we were professionally employed," Ondiege said.
"All we need are our dues. Let him pay us because we are ready and very willing to leave," he added.
Clement Otieno, another employee, also appealed for help, stating that they have been unable to pay their bills.
