On July 2, 2021, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) announced plans to relocate the famous Grogon mechanics to a new area along Thika Road, marking the end of an era for the downtown Nairobi landmark.
Grogan, which has been a hub for spare parts and vehicle repair trade, covers a significant area including Kirinyaga Road, Lower Kirinyaga Road, and off Lower Kirinyaga Road, stretching from the Globe Roundabout to Riverside in Ngara.
According to NMS director-general, Maj-Gen Mohamed Badi, the relocation will take place at a site sandwiched between Utalii College and Mathari Hospital on Thika Road. The new site has been acquired, and construction of bus termini is expected to be completed within the next month.
However, the move has sparked concerns from Grogon mechanics and traders in the area, who fear that the relocation will put off clients. Teresia Mwangi, the chairperson of the National Federation of Juakali Artisans (KNFJKA), estimates that over 10,000 people earn a living in the Grogan area.
