Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has named Amb. John Mwangemi as the new acting managing director, effective July 1, 2021, as the agency looks for a suitable candidate to fill the position.
Amb. Mwangemi takes over from Eng. Rashid Salim, who served in an acting capacity for 15 months.
According to the KPA website, Amb. John Mwangemi is the immediate former Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to Djibouti and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He previously served as Kenya's High Commissioner to Rwanda and has held executive leadership positions in the corporate world locally and internationally.
The appointment comes as KPA faces leadership challenges, with General (Rtd) Joseph Kibwana stepping down as chairman in June this year, alongside three other board members.
Investigations into corruption allegations at KPA are ongoing, with a recent report by the auditor general pointing to the possible loss of over KSh4.2 billion.
Former managing director Daniel Manduku resigned in March last year after being accused of engaging in corrupt practices, and was charged with the suspected loss of Sh2 billion at the government agency.
