On July 1, 2021, the Kenya Ports Authority Board of Directors announced the appointment of Ambassador John Mwangemi as the new Acting Managing Director.

He takes over from Eng. Rashid Salim, who has worked at KPA for over 30 years and is retiring. Eng. Salim previously served as the General Manager Engineering Services.

Ambassador Mwangemi has a rich background in diplomacy and corporate leadership. He was the immediate former Ambassador of Kenya to Djibouti and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and previously served as Kenya's High Commissioner to Rwanda.

His appointment comes shortly after the launch of berth No 1 and container terminal No 1 of Lamu Port in Manda Bay.

Eng. Rashid Salim took over as Acting Managing Director in March 2020, following the resignation of Daniel Manduku, who stepped down amid corruption allegations.
