On July 1, 2021, a sense of unease settled over Nairobi's Kayole area after a local trader, Dickson Githinji, was shot dead in his Mpesa shop.
A neighbour described the incident, saying:
"The thugs came in at around 9:30 pm in his Mpesa shop. The three thugs were in a motorbike and demanded that Githinji gives them money, Githinji refused so they shot him,"
The neighbour's account suggests that the murder was a premeditated act, with the suspects allegedly making away with Ksh. 100,000.
However, what has left the community reeling is the lack of action from the police. Susan Wathira, a resident, expressed her frustration, saying:
"What is hurting us is that this lady who sells jaba just next door has never been questioned by the police, neither has she presented herself to the police to record a statement,"
The police's inaction has led to accusations of laxity, with residents threatening to hold demonstrations to demand justice for Githinji's murder.
According to the Kayole DCIO, his office is aware of the matter and is currently conducting investigations. However, the community remains skeptical, and the situation remains tense.
