On July 1, 2021, the Narok County Government issued a stern warning to potato traders in the Melili area of Narok North Sub-County to adhere to the Irish Potatoes Regulations 2019 or face the consequences.
Senior Chief Moses Dapash, speaking to the press, revealed that the County Government had received numerous complaints from farmers regarding the continued use of extended sacks by potato brokers, which is in direct contravention of the regulations.
The regulations, enacted to protect farmers from exploitation by brokers, require that Irish potatoes be packed into a maximum weight of 50kg. This move is expected to bring significant relief to farmers, who previously suffered losses of up to 50% due to poor packaging.
According to the regulations, potato dealers who violate the law risk a three-year jail term or a Sh5 million fine, or both.
Following protests from farmers in the area, the County Government held talks with the farmers and sensitized them on the importance of following the regulations.
By enforcing the regulations, the County Government aims to protect the rights of farmers and ensure that they receive fair returns for their produce.
