Published on June 30, 2021, Nyamira county has been grappling with a rising number of suicides, with at least 13 lives lost every month.

According to County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the victims often take their own lives due to domestic and gender-based violence.

Speaking to reporters, Mariba emphasized the need for couples to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences, rather than resorting to violence or suicide.

He also highlighted the devastating impact of these deaths on children, who are often left orphaned and struggling to cope socially and economically.

Mariba called on churches and counseling departments to take a leading role in providing support and guidance to families affected by these incidents.

Records show that Nyamira North, Manga, and Nyamira South sub-counties have been among the hardest hit by these cases of suicide and domestic violence.
