Canada has been gripped by a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record highs in British Columbia.
As of Tuesday, at least 230 people have lost their lives in the province since Friday, with officials describing the situation as an 'unprecedented time'.
Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe stated,
"Since the onset of the heat wave late last week, the BC Coroners Service has experienced a significant increase in deaths reported where it is suspected that extreme heat has been contributory."
The coroners are working around the clock to gather information and determine the cause of the deaths, with many attributed to the historic heatwave.
High temperatures have also been reported in Vancouver and neighboring Burnaby and Surrey, with the elderly being the most affected population.
Canada has broken its temperature record for three consecutive days, with temperatures in British Columbia reaching almost 50°C in Lytton, BC.
