On June 30, 2021, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Raila Odinga instructed his party to implement a new strategy for the 2022 general election.
As part of this strategy, ODM has waived its membership registration fee for a period of three months, starting from July 1, 2021, in response to the economic challenges caused by the pandemic.
According to a statement by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, the party's stakeholders had petitioned for the waiver of the membership fee, which is normally Ksh100, payable upon application.
"In light of this, Raila Odinga has directed my office to waive the membership fee for anyone wishing to join our party in the next three months beginning July 1, 2021," stated Sifuna.
During an interview on TV 47 on June 7, 2021, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya expressed his readiness to sacrifice vying for the presidential seat if Raila expressed interest in the same position.
"If my party leader stands, I think I would rather go for another post instead of opposing him because we have worked together all this time since I joined the party in 2005," he stated.
