Kenya's high jump champion Mathew Sawe has secured a spot at the Tokyo Olympic Games, marking a historic moment in his athletic career.
As the African Games high jump silver medallist, Sawe's qualification was confirmed after he ranked 24th in the world by the close of the qualifying deadline on June 29.
According to World Athletics, the top 30 athletes in the ranking by the end of the deadline qualify for the Olympics, regardless of whether they have attained the qualifying standards.
On June 19, Sawe was named in the Kenyan athletics team for the Tokyo Summer Games during the three-day trials at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
This will be Sawe's first Olympic appearance, and he is set to compete in the Men's High Jump event.
Athletics Kenya (@athletics_kenya) congratulated Sawe on his achievement, stating, 'Congratulations to #MathewSawe for attaining the @Tokyo2020 qualifying standard in Men's High Jump through the @WorldAthletics ranking System.'
