On social media, a phrase has been trending, bringing Kenyans together in a wave of memes and humor. But few know the story behind 'Nitakufinya,' a term that has been making the rounds for quite some time.

Published on June 30, 2021, the story begins with an old video from K24 TV, where an investigative piece exposed illegal electricity connections in informal settlements, specifically in Mukuru, Nakuru County.

Charles Musyoka, an interviewee, shared his experience of being electrocuted and how it affected his hands. However, his narration was cut short by a man in the crowd, who was not pleased with the revelations.

The man, who has become a trending figure, threatened Musyoka, telling him to stop talking about electricity matters and instead ask the government for a job opportunity. He famously said, "Stop talking about electricity matters. Let the people involved speak about it. Ask the government to give you a job," before Musyoka responded, "Finya." The man then walked away, saying, "Nitakufinya (I will deal with you).">

Since then, 'Nitakufinya' has become an online sensation, with creatives playing around with the term to create memes. Some of the popular ones include, "New shoes in first new week - Nitakufinya" and "When the toothpaste is about to run out - Nitakufinya."

Kenya Power has been working towards reducing total system losses to 20 per cent by the end of June 2021. In March, the power distributor started a countrywide operation to curb illegal electricity connections and enhance efficiency after realizing a 24.7 per cent loss in the year ending June 2020.
