On June 30, 2021, Migori County Governor Hezekiah Okoth Obado made headlines by announcing his bid for the presidency in 2022.
Speaking at a local broadcast station, Obado stated that he would be vying for the presidency using his People Democratic Movement Party (PDP), a party he claims is well-established and has produced several MPs, MCAs, and a governor.
When asked about his relationship with Deputy President William Ruto, Obado emphasized that PDP is not a new party and should not be underestimated. He noted that PDP is older and bigger than the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which he claimed was formed recently.
Obado also expressed his support for the existence of multiple parties in Kenya, stating that it enhances democracy. He cited examples from other regions, such as Ukambani, where several parties coexist without conflicts.
However, Obado's presidential bid may face challenges due to his ongoing court cases, including murder and corruption charges related to his tenure as Migori County Governor.
