On June 30, 2021, the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) launched a training program for boda boda operators in Kajiado County to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
The training, which is taking place at the KCB grounds in Kajiado Central, aims to equip the operators with skills such as safe riding, first aid, and adherence to traffic rules and highway codes.
At least 300 boda boda operators have benefited from the training, which is part of KRB's broader corporate social responsibility to promote road safety.
According to KRB Director General Rashid Mohamed, the training is aligned with the country's broader development agenda, including the Third Medium Term Plan of Kenya's Vision 2030 and the Big Four Agenda.
"The Board is hoping to leverage partnerships to broaden the reach and effectiveness of our road safety awareness and campaigns," Mohamed said.
Statistics from the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) show that 588 boda boda riders died in road accidents between January and June 2021, a rise of 160 deaths compared to the same period last year.
During the training, the boda boda operators will also be taken through HIV counselling and testing, and KRB will issue reflector jackets and helmets to all riders after the training.
