On June 29, 2021, Lamu Port was set to receive two more ships, marking a significant milestone in its expansion. The port is expected to receive a third vessel from CMA CGM, positioning itself to start handling freight.
The first CMA CGM vessel, which made a maiden call, docked in Lamu on July 4, 2021, from the former Soviet Union. The vessel collected about 50 twenty-foot equivalent units from Zanzibar to Far West.
Kenya Ports Authority's Geoffery Namadoa confirmed the arrival of the vessels, stating that the port was now equipped to handle any vessel. He also announced the arrival of Lamu Shipping Company's vessel, Amu 1, with cargo from Zanzibar in the next few days.
Express Shipping Line had also transported some of its cargo handling equipment to the port, further solidifying its position in the region.
"On Sunday we received two harbour mobile cranes, which mark the last batch of key equipment for cargo handling now we can handle any vessel at the moment. Early July, we expect to receive one of the largest ships from CMA, which is currently at the [former] Soviet Union," Geoffery Namadoa said.
