Published on June 29, 2021, the East African Community (EAC) has tabled a $91.7 million budget for the 2021/22 financial year.
The budget is divided into two main components: $54.1 million (59%) to be contributed equally by member states or raised as other internal revenues, and $37.6 million (41%) to be sourced from development partners.
According to the allocation, the Secretariat is expected to receive $43.8 million, the East African Legislative Assembly $15.4 million, and the East African Court of Justice $3.7 million.
Denis Namara, the EALA member and chair of the General Purpose Committee, stated that despite the meager budget, they are still negotiating with the council to request around $3 million to fund the gaps.
The global COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the East African Community member states, leading to deteriorating external positions due to its adverse effects on tourism, aviation, workers' remittances, foreign direct investment, and loan disbursements.
