On June 29, 2021, the government's failure to compensate families affected by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) construction in Mai Mahiu three years ago came back to haunt them as they faced another eviction.
Over 100 farmers from Nyakinyua area, who were displaced by the SGR project, are now being forced to give up their remaining parcels of land for the upcoming meter-gauge railway line from the Inland Container Depot in Mai Mahiu to Longonot town.
The farmers, who have been waiting for compensation for three years, have vowed not to give in to the government's demands until they receive their rightful dues.
According to Joseph Gathuita, a victim of the SGR project, the government has been taking them in circles for three years, failing to provide any compensation.
Nakuru County Commissioner Erastus Mbui has assured the affected families that they will receive their compensation once the government establishes the real owners and value of the land.
