On July 1, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Mandera County, where a 28-year-old woman was brutally stabbed 20 times by her husband.

According to police sources, the suspect attempted to hide his wife's body in a room before he was discovered and arrested.

Women leaders in the county have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for stricter laws on gender-based violence.

Hindia Hussein, a nominated MCA in the Mandera County Assembly, stated that it is time for everyone to stand up against gender-based violence.

Ms. Hussein also criticized the local dispute resolution mechanism, known as Maslaha, for favoring culprits, especially those with financial means to navigate through a criminal case.

"We are saddened by this incident. This is unusual for Muslim communities. We want the law to take its full course," Hussein said.

Mandera OCPD Erick Ngetich confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and would be arraigned in court.

Ward representatives have vowed to pass legislation at the county assembly to address cases of domestic violence.
