On June 25, 2021, Josephat Nyangweso, a 45-year-old man, was arraigned at a court in Kisii for dealing in alcoholic drinks without a license. He was fined Ksh10,000 or three months' imprisonment.
However, Nyangweso was unable to raise the fine and was referred to Kisii GK Prison. He was temporarily held at Kisii Central Police Station, awaiting space at the prison.
According to a police report, Nyangweso first complained of sickness on June 27, 2021, and was treated and discharged in fair condition. Tragically, he died while undergoing treatment at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH).
The police report, seen by K24 Digital, stated that Nyangweso was charged under section 8(1)(b) as read with section 71 of the Kisii County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act of 2015.
His body has been moved to the KTRH morgue pending a postmortem exercise.
