On August 27, 2012, radical Islamist Sheikh Aboud Rogo Mohamed was assassinated in Mombasa, sparking days of unrest among his youthful supporters.

A man who was in possession of video material related to the assassination has been charged with 12 terrorism counts, including belonging to Al Shabaab and promoting extremist religious beliefs.

The suspect, Said Chivatsi Lewa, denied all the charges when he was arraigned on Friday before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Rabera.

According to the charge sheet, Lewa is alleged to have committed the crimes in Mazeras EPZ in Kilifi County on or around June 12 this year.

The prosecution has listed one witness, a police officer, and is seeking to deny Lewa bond due to an ongoing investigation against him.

The magistrate will rule on Lewa's bail application on Wednesday.
