June 28, 2021, marked a significant turning point for the women of Nkoilale Women Group in Narok South Sub-County. They had been struggling to make ends meet, selling their handmade beadwork items by the roadside or under trees.

Magdalene Ntinka, the production officer at their craft centre, explained that the group was established in 2005 with 85 women, primarily engaged in beadwork and shop operations. However, they lacked a stable market for their products, leading to low earnings and limited financial stability.

That changed when the Nkoilale Community Development Organisation stepped in, linking the women to a new market and employing an expert to improve the quality of their beadwork. The women are now selling a variety of items, including bracelets, belts, necklaces, and bead-decorated Maasai rungus (clubs).

"The women now have the financial means to take their children to school, improve their livelihoods, and invest in modern equipment for cooking and other essential needs," Magdalene said.

With their newfound financial stability, the women have made significant improvements to their lives. They have purchased water tanks, conserved the environment by planting tree seedlings, and even assisted their husbands and family members in building modern houses.

Magdalene urged the County government of Narok to support the establishment of more craft centres throughout the county, enabling women to employ themselves and earn a living through beadwork.
