On June 28, 2021, d.light Kenya launched a joint initiative with the European Investment Bank to provide solar energy to rural schools in Machakos County.
The project aims to improve learning conditions for pupils in rural areas, where access to electricity is limited.
d.light Marketing Director Alex Olum stated, "At d.light Kenya, we are looking at providing clean energy and unlocking a brighter future for as many pupils as possible, especially those from rural areas where there is little or no power connectivity at all."
Four schools in Machakos County have benefited from the project: Nzoiani, Kakulutuini, Kyamboo, and Malatani Primary Schools.
Nzoiani Head teacher Shedrack Ivalo expressed gratitude for the solar panels and lights, saying, "Initially, we had solar lanterns, but all are now worn out, so we are unable to conduct our early morning and evening lessons."
He added, "We are in dire need of lighting to facilitate these lessons so as to improve academic standards."
The project has been welcomed by the head teachers of the beneficiary schools, who see it as a vital step towards improving education in rural areas.
