On June 27, 2021, the 2021 BET Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson.

Burna Boy, a Nigerian star, emerged victorious, taking home the coveted award.

He beat a strong lineup of nominees, including Diamond Platinumz from Tanzania, Youssoupha from France, Emicida from Brazil, Aya Nakamura from France, Headie One from the UK, Young T & Bugsey from the UK, and fellow Nigerian Wizkid.

This is Burna Boy's third BET Award, following his wins in 2019 and 2020.

His win comes just a few months after he made history as the first Nigerian artist to win a Grammy Award for his album 'Twice As Tall' in March 2021.

Additionally, Burna Boy was recently hosted by American rapper and entrepreneur P. Diddy at his home, sparking rumors of a potential collaboration.

Interestingly, Diamond Platinumz's loss at the BET Awards comes just weeks after a petition emerged from Tanzanians calling for him to be removed from the competition.

Uganda's Eddy Kenzo was the first East African artist to win a BET Award in 2015, followed by Tanzania's Rayvanny in 2017.
