On June 28, 2021, the BET Awards took place in Los Angeles, and Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz was a standout figure on the red carpet, donning full Maasai wear.
As one of the nominees for the Best International Award, alongside Wizkid and Burna Boy, Diamond's bold fashion choice caught the attention of many in attendance.
Accompanied by his manager Babu Tale, Diamond's Maasai attire was a nod to his East African heritage and a representation of the Swahili nation.
Although he didn't take home the award, which was won by Burna Boy for the second consecutive year, Diamond expressed gratitude to his fans for their support on social media.
"Through this award, I have seen how much Tanzanians have unity, love and appreciation for us," he said.
He also acknowledged the immense support he received from East Africa and Africa as a whole, despite losing to the Nigerians.
"I thank each and every one of you for the great love you have shown me … And I believe that sometimes we will carry it. I will be comforted tomorrow and the next day another artist will also be in the matter of representing the Nation give us strength as you have given me," Diamond added.
