On June 21st to 24th, 2021, the Mombasa Tea Auction offered a staggering 13 million kilograms of tea for sale, a significant increase from the 12.2 million kilograms offered during the previous sale and 112.9 million kilograms for the same period last year.

Despite the large quantity, only 11 million kilograms were sold, a slight decrease from the 11.7 million kilograms sold during the same period last year and 10.9 million kilograms sold during the previous sale.

According to the auction records, the average price per kilogram dropped to $1.67, a sharp decrease from $1.74 during the previous sale and $1.78 during the same period last year.

As the tea industry continues to evolve, the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) is exploring opportunities for tea farmers to own direct shareholding, a move that could potentially transform the industry.
