On June 15, 2021, Hafsa Mohamed Lukman, a Kamukunji-based businesswoman, was abducted by two individuals who would later be identified as Jackson Njogu, 24, and Hafsa Abdi, 21. The duo had demanded a ransom of Sh5 million in exchange for her safe release.
However, when the ransom wasn't delivered, the kidnappers opted to flee from detectives who were closing in on them. They had already drained Hafsa's bank accounts to the tune of Sh650,000 and used the loot to operate a bar in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, for a little over a week.
On Sunday morning, undercover sleuths from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and their Special Service Unit counterparts tracked down the kidnappers to Crystal View Lodge in Kinangop, where they were arrested while still in bed.
According to the DCI, the two kidnappers had imagined that the detectives would never find them, but their luck ran out on that fateful morning. The operation was carried out swiftly, leaving some locals stunned.
Area residents praised the detectives for their professionalism and efficiency, with one regular customer at the lodge saying, 'It appears the police were aware of what they wanted and how to get it. I was in the hotel the previous night, and I noticed two unfamiliar faces which I dismissed as traders, but those must have been the detectives.'
