Published on June 28, 2021, Liz Muragu, Marketing Operations Manager at SportPesa, has an inspiring career journey that spans from selling fire extinguishers to leading marketing operations.

With a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Communication from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Business Management from the same university, Muragu's passion for football led her to pursue a career in the sporting world.

She shares her journey with us, highlighting key moments, lessons learned, and the people who have shaped her career growth.

Early Life and Career Ambitions

Muragu is the second born of three girls and was a competitive athlete in her primary school days, competing in 200m and 400m races. However, her sporting ambitions were halted when she attended a secondary school without a playing field.

Despite this setback, her love for sports remained, and she eventually landed a job selling fire extinguishers immediately after completing her Diploma in Business Management.

Career Progression

Muragu's career journey took her to the Kenyan Premier League, where she worked as a personal assistant to the CEO and later as an events/partnerships executive. She then joined SportPesa five and a half years ago as a Football Activations Executive.

Her current role as Marketing Operations Manager entails running the functions of marketing that bring revenue to the company, through partnerships, advertising, activations, and merchandising, while taking good care of all stakeholders.

Key Drivers of Career Growth

Muragu attributes her career growth to giving her all to her work, focusing on her goals, being genuine, and avoiding life's distractions. She also credits her mum, who has been a source of great inspiration, and her husband and sisters, who are her biggest cheerleaders.

She also mentions her first boss at FireTech Engineering, Mr. Peter Kabuta, former bosses at the KPL, and SportPesa management, who have all given her great opportunities.

Lessons Learned and Advice

Muragu's advice to her younger self is to be confident and follow her passion. She also advises the youth in Kenya and Africa to keep at it, do their best, and pray, knowing that they have given it their all.
