Gunfire erupted in the heart of New York City's Times Square on a Sunday afternoon, leaving a 21-year-old man wounded.
According to a New York City Police Department spokesman, the shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. near Seventh Avenue and West 46th Street.
The victim, who was walking with his family, was not the intended target of the shooting, a law enforcement official revealed. Six men were arguing in the area when one of them pulled a gun and fired several shots, striking the victim.
By 7 p.m., activity in the area had returned to normal, with tourists snapping photos and taking in the sights.
The shooting comes as New York City has seen a rise in shootings over the past year, with 777 people shot in 680 incidents as of June 20, according to department crime figures.
The area where the shooting occurred is surrounded by Broadway theaters, which are now preparing to reopen after the coronavirus pandemic.
