On June 27, 2021, the Nyanza Regional Police Commander, Karanja Muiruri, laid a trap that led to the arrest of five local administrators in Kisumu who were accused of harassment and soliciting bribes during the Covid-19 curfew.
The five, including two chiefs and three assistant chiefs, were accused of erecting an illegal roadblock at Mamboleo area in Kisumu, contrary to guidelines issued by the Inspector General of Police.
According to Muiruri, the local administrators used vigilante groups during their unlawful mission and solicited bribes from people during curfew hours.
While pretending to negotiate his freedom, Muiruri called police officers who arrested the five chiefs while their accomplices escaped.
The five are expected to appear before Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika and Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko for disciplinary action.
