On June 26, 2021, the Kisumu National Polytechnic was closed for 14 days following a student strike.
The strike was sparked by the institution's decision to postpone student body elections, leading to a tense standoff between students and police.
Police officers were forced to lob teargas to contain the situation, with some students scaling perimeter walls to escape the chaos.
The closure was also linked to the reviewed Covid-19 containment measures in Kisumu and other 13 lake region counties, with the institution deemed a hotspot for the virus.
As a result, the institution requested all students to vacate the premises immediately.
