On June 26, 2021, Kisii County governor, James Ongwae, officially received the Kiamwasi Rehabilitation Centre from the National Authority for Campaigns Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) Chief Executive Officer, Victor Okioma.

The centre, which has 20 to 30 beds, is intended to provide a temporary haven for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Governor Ongwae emphasized that those admitted will undergo treatment, reform, and eventually return to their families or relatives.

“We do not expect those admitted to settle and feel that they are at home. They will leave to create room for others to be supported,” Ongwae said.

According to Ongwae, the centre was co-funded by the county and NACADA at a cost of Ksh. 22 million. He noted that the centre will help individuals reform and lead normal lives, particularly those who have resorted to substance abuse due to stressful life situations.

“In sub-Saharan Africa, the number of people who abuse alcohol and drugs will increase by 130 per cent by 2050,” Ongwae said, highlighting the need for the centre.

During the handover ceremony, Okioma commended the county government for its efforts in addressing the issue of drug and alcohol abuse. He noted that Kisii and Nyamira counties are hotspots for substance abuse, which has led to broken families, job losses, and other adverse consequences.
