Machakos to Get Formula 1 Track by June 2022, Governor Mutua Promises

On June 26, 2021, Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua announced through his social media page that his administration was on course to build a Formula 1 track in the new Machakos People’s Park. The track, which will be approximately 12-14 kilometres long, is expected to be ready by June 2022.

According to Governor Mutua, the project will be financed by the Machakos County Government under the County Road Project. He stated that apart from finishing the Formula 1 track, he would also lobby to have the next Safari Rally held in his county.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, Governor Mutua confirmed that the project is on course and will be used by regular drivers as a normal road to control traffic. He justified the reason to use the Formula 1 track as a road, claiming that the country is not economically stable enough to only use it for races.

However, Governor Mutua pointed fingers at the former Senator Johnstone Muthama whom he accused of sabotaging the project. He assured that the case challenging the project was thrown out, which means the county government is free to carry on with its execution.

Additionally, Governor Mutua stated that the county government in consultation with the National government is planning to build a modern airport in Machakos. The runway of the airport will be used for another racing event in addition to the one he will build in the Machakos People’s Park.

He added that if the county builds a racing track, it will be much easier for Kenyans, especially Nairobians to attend events such as Safari Rally as the distance will allow most people to commute, unlike Naivasha which has forced most rally lovers to stay in hotels and tents.
