The World Rally Championships (WRC) Safari Rally officially started on June 24, 2021, with a ceremonial flag off by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, marking the return of the global competition to Kenya after a 19-year absence.
Unlike previous editions, the 2021 Safari Rally is concentrated in Naivasha, Nakuru County, for security reasons. This change is a common trend in modern rallies worldwide, where competition is now confined to a specific section to ensure the safety of drivers and fans.
However, the excitement of the rally's return was marred by safety concerns as fans attempted to take selfies with the drivers on the road to Kasarani Stadium and at the stadium itself. Some fans even tried to pose on the car bonnets, putting themselves and others at risk.
These incidents raise concerns that the world governing body, FIA, may reconsider Kenya's admission to the WRC circuit, citing safety concerns as one of the reasons for the Safari Rally's initial exclusion.
Security personnel on the ground are urged to take crowd control more seriously, and fans are asked to be more disciplined in their enthusiasm for the rally. By doing so, Kenya can ensure the continued success of the Safari Rally and its reputation as a destination of choice for international events.
