Wahu Kagwi, a renowned musician and entrepreneur, has successfully run Afrosiri Salon in Nairobi County for over seven years. Her business offers a range of services, including hair, manicure, pedicure, and spa treatments.
According to Wahu, being original is crucial in the competitive beauty industry. She emphasizes the need to have a solid strategy and not be a copycat. 'If you start something, do it because you believe in it and have a strategy,' she advises.
Wahu also stresses the importance of considering the size and location of the salon when determining the capital required to start the business. 'There is no set standard for a salon; there are those who want to start a salon in a house, others want it in an estate while some prefer malls,' she explains.
She recommends seeking investment partners, loans from banks, and microfinance institutions that target women and the youth to secure funding. Wahu also borrowed from friends and took a loan with her business partner to inject into the business.
Wahu believes that the client is always right and emphasizes the need to listen to their needs and preferences. 'You can have everything in place but if it is not working out for the client, they won’t come,' she says.
Having a solid plan and sticking to it is also essential, according to Wahu. She emphasizes the importance of having a good relationship with her team and prioritizing their comfort and well-being.
Wahu also highlights the power of social media in the modern business landscape. 'A good friend advised me to move my business online and warned me that if I did not do so, it will die,' she recalls.
She underscores the importance of having a business presence on social media, citing the high cost of advertising on mainstream media. Wahu also researches trends in the hair business to stay ahead of the competition and provide value to her clients.
Wahu's business has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but she has adapted by introducing measures such as making appointments before visiting the salon to avoid crowding.
Despite the challenges, Wahu remains focused on her core vision and emphasizes the need to stay innovative and adapt to changing circumstances.
