On June 25, 2021, a Minnesota judge handed down a 22-1/2 year prison sentence to former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd during an arrest in May 2020.

Chauvin, 45, was found guilty on April 20 of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter after a highly publicized trial.

Prosecutors had asked for a 30-year prison sentence, while the defense had requested probation.

Video footage of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes sparked global outrage and protests.

Prosecutors described Chauvin's crime as one that 'shocked the conscience of the Nation.'

Chauvin has been held at the state's maximum security prison in Oak Park Heights since his conviction.

Three other police officers involved in Floyd's arrest were fired and are due to face trial next year on charges of aiding and abetting Floyd's murder.
