On June 24, 2021, Nyanza Regional Police Commander Karanja Muiruri was flagged down by five chiefs at a roadblock in Obwolo, Kajulu, Kisumu County.
According to Muiruri, the chiefs demanded money from him, claiming he was violating curfew rules.
However, Muiruri had been informed about the chiefs' alleged harassment of residents and decided to investigate by disguising himself as a civilian.
After 'arresting' Muiruri, his juniors arrived at the scene and arrested the chiefs, who are currently out on free bond.
The five chiefs are accused of conspiring with local residents to harass and solicit bribes from those violating Covid-19 and curfew rules.
Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika and Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko will discipline the chiefs, said Muiruri.
