On June 25, 2021, Wilson Sossion, secretary-general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), announced his resignation at a press conference in Nairobi.
The move came just a day before the union's national elections, which had become increasingly contentious.
Sossion had been at odds with the Labour ministry, accusing them of 'dishonesty and outright biasness' in planning the election.
He had also considered appointing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to oversee the polls.
The union had been experiencing frosty relations with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as well.
Despite his efforts to address these issues, Sossion ultimately felt that the government was not supporting his leadership, leading to his decision to resign.
