On February 2, 2021, influential political blogger Augustus Mutuku Mwathe met his untimely death after being attacked by unknown assailants in Kibwezi East.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mwathe's death is linked to a dispute with an aspiring candidate for a political seat in Kibwezi in the 2022 General Election.

DCI detectives have arrested three suspects in connection with Mwathe's death, including the aspiring candidate, Amos Kyondu, Abdullahi Wako, an Administration Police officer, and Abed Musembi, a Kenya Power employee.

“On the fateful evening, before he was attacked, Mutuku had joined three friends at Club DK in Mlolongo for drinks. At around 11 pm, one of the friends left the club headed home, but the deceased did not return home as promised,” the DCI said in a statement.

“The following morning, Mwathe called his girlfriend, informing her that he had been attacked by unknown assailants and was at Shalom Hospital in Athi River, where he had been taken by a good Samaritan. Unfortunately, he later succumbed to the injuries,” the DCI added.
