On June 23, 2021, a protestor waved a rainbow flag on the pitch before the Germany vs. Hungary match at the European Championship in Munich.
UEFA has launched an investigation into 'potential discriminatory incidents' that took place during the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The governing body of European soccer did not provide details about the incidents, but stated that an ethics and disciplinary inspector had been appointed to look into the matter.
Before the match, a protestor had invaded the pitch, waving a rainbow flag, while fans both inside and outside the stadium displayed similar banners in support of LGBTQ rights.
This came after UEFA refused a request from Munich's mayor, Dieter Reiter, to have the stadium lit in rainbow colors in protest of an anti-LGBTQ law in Hungary.
The law, which was passed in Hungary, bans school materials deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change, and restricts the media from showing such content in programs accessible to minors.
UEFA had also opened an investigation into Hungary's matches against Portugal and France in Budapest, following incidents that included banners with anti-LGBTQ messages and a protest against players taking a knee to protest racism.
Germany's late goal from Leon Goretzka salvaged a draw for the team, setting up a last-16 clash with England, while Hungary was knocked out of the tournament.
