Kenya is grappling with a rising crime wave, with cases of kidnappings, muggings, and murder on the increase.

According to reports, perpetrators of these heinous crimes have been targeting defenceless children, leaving families in a state of shock and grief.

One such case is that of Shantel Nzembi, an eight-year-old girl who was kidnapped in Kitengela, Kajiado County in May. Her abductors demanded a ransom of Sh300,000, but she was found dead days later.

Another case is that of Priscilla Naserian, an 11-year-old girl from Kajiado who went missing in June. Her body was later found dumped in a bush a few kilometres from her home.

These cases are symptomatic of a deeper societal problem that requires investigation. While some cases may be attributed to ordinary crime, others may be linked to mental illness or the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many people have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet, leading to increased desperation and depression. The government must take action to alleviate the suffering of those driven to penury by the pandemic and ensure that those who break the law face justice.
