On June 24, 2021, a three-judge bench of the High Court in Nairobi made a landmark ruling that upheld the ascension of Anne Kananu to the position of Nairobi Governor.
The court, comprising Justices Said Chitembwe, Weldon Korir, and Wilfrida Okwany, ruled that Members of the County Assembly followed due process while considering Kananu, who had initially been nominated by Mike Sonko as his deputy.
Her approval on January 15, 2021, effectively stalled a by-election to replace Sonko, which had been slated for February 18, 2021.
