On June 24th, 2021, the High Court delivered a landmark ruling that endorsed the impeachment of Mike Sonko as Nairobi Governor by the Nairobi County Assembly and the Senate.
The three-judge bench, comprising Justices Wilfrida Okwany, Said Chitembwe, and Weldon Korir, dismissed Sonko's claims that his impeachment was unconstitutional.
According to the judges, 'We do not see any external hand in the impeachment of Sonko…We do not find any merit that his impeachment was engineered. We come to the conclusion that the impeachment of Sonko was constitutional…'
The court also upheld the nomination and appointment of Anne Kananu as Nairobi Deputy Governor, rejecting Sonko's objections to her appointment.
With this ruling, Kananu, who assumed office in January, will not be officially sworn in as Nairobi's third Governor yet, pending Sonko's appeal against the High Court ruling.
Mike Sonko was ejected from office in December 2020 over claims of abuse of office, gross violation of the law, committing a crime under the national and international laws, and lacking the capability to run the county.
