On February 2, 2021, Augustus Mutuku Mwathe, a well-known political blogger and grassroots mobilizer in Kibwezi East, tragically lost his life after being attacked by unknown assailants.

According to the DCI, the deceased had allegedly fallen out with an aspiring candidate for a political seat in Kibwezi, ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

Amos Kyondu, a police officer attached to the CIPU in Kitengela, Abdullahi Wako, and Abed Musembi, an employee of Kenya Power and Lighting Company based in Kitengela, were arrested in connection to Mutuku's death.

DCI stated that homicide detectives investigating the matter arrested the three suspects as persons of interest in the murder.

Police investigations revealed that Mutuku was attacked after joining friends Charles Mulei, George Mutisya, and Abed Musembi at Club DK in Mlolongo for drinks.

As reported by the DCI, 'At around 11 pm, Mulei left the club headed home. However, he was concerned about how Mutuku would get home since he didn’t have a car but Musembi offered to drop him, since they all lived in Kitengela.'

Despite efforts by Mutuku's girlfriend to reach him, he failed to return home as promised, and the following morning, she received a call from him informing her that he had been attacked by unknown assailants and was at Shalom Hospital in Athi River.

Unfortunately, Mutuku succumbed to his injuries, and detectives are currently interrogating the suspects to ascertain the circumstances leading to the attack and their possible involvement in Mutuku's death.
