On June 17, 2021, a tragic accident occurred at the junction of Tom Mboya and Marugua lane in Nairobi, resulting in the death of Meline Waithera Mbugua, the daughter of Deputy Inspector General of police Edward Mbugua.

Patrick Macharia Magu, the matatu driver involved in the accident, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving an unroadworthy motor vehicle.

According to the prosecution, Macharia drove the Isuzu mini bus recklessly and at a speed or in a manner which was dangerous to the public. The vehicle's windows were tinted, and it lacked a valid inspection sticker.

The court heard that some parts and equipment of the vehicle were not properly maintained, making it a danger to other road users or passengers.

Macharia has denied the charges and was released on a bond of Sh600, 000 or cash bail of Sh300, 000 pending trial.
