Published on June 24, 2021, Kakamega County government is working on a major water project to bring clean and safe piped water to residents. The project, located in Chekalini location, Lugari Sub-County, is a significant step towards ensuring that residents have access to clean water.

The Chief Officer for Water Resources, Eng. Joseck Maloba, said the water treatment plant has a capacity to serve more than 12,128 households. The plant is capable of producing 100M 3 of water per hour, with phase one costing Sh38 million and the ongoing phase two costing Sh52 million.

Eng. Maloba explained that the third and final phase will involve the installation of solar power and electricity connection. The contractor has already procured the necessary equipment, including a floating Pontoon, 40 feet container with filtration units, chlorine chemical dozers with chemical dosing tanks, filter media, booster pump, and raw submersible water pump.

The area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Kenneth Indusa, thanked the county government for setting up the project, saying it will benefit not only Chekalini residents but the larger Lugari Sub-County. The project is part of a larger initiative to provide clean and safe piped water to residents, with other similar projects being implemented in Malava, Ikolomani, Shinyalu, and Navakholo Sub-Counties.
